Our Story
Origins
The Seafaring in East Africa (SEA) Project was established in July 2014 by Akshay Sarathi, then a graduate student of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His goal was to create an organization that would work with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar in archaeological research and cultural heritage management.
Purpose
The SEA Project was conceived as an institution that would work with local governments and researchers in East Africa to produce world-class cultural research. Through its Field Station, The SEA Project physically houses researchers, artifacts, and equipment. The SEA Project facilitates research conduced in any discipline through its contacts with the local community and government institutions.
Community Research
The SEA Project is committed to community archaeology and research that benefits local communities in a variety of ways. Intensive community participation and management of research projects ensures the local relevance of archaeology and aids in the decolonization of knowledge production.
